Adolescent personality development is influenced by traits like neuroticism and social problems, which can impact parent-child relationships. A positive relationship quality, in turn, affects conscientiousness and social adjustment.
Area of Science:
- Psychology
- Developmental Psychology
- Personality Psychology
Background:
- The Dispositional, Adaptational, and Environmental (DAE) model offers a framework for understanding personality development.
- Previous research suggests interplay between personality traits, adaptations, and environmental factors.
Purpose of the Study:
- To conceptually replicate the DAE model in a community sample of adolescents.
- To investigate longitudinal associations between dispositional, adaptational, and environmental variables.
- To examine the role of the parent-child relationship in personality development.
Main Methods:
- Cross-lagged panel models were used to analyze data from 463 adolescents (mean age 13.6 years, 51% female).
- Longitudinal associations between neuroticism, disagreeableness, unconscientiousness (Dispositional), social problems (Adaptational), and perceived parent-child relationship quality (Environmental) were assessed.
Main Results:
- High levels of neuroticism, disagreeableness, and social problems predicted lower perceived parent-child relationship quality.
- Perceived parent-child relationship quality predicted higher unconscientiousness and social problems.
- No mediation effects were found, and bidirectional influences between dispositions and adaptations were not supported.
Conclusions:
- The findings partially support the DAE model, highlighting person-environment interactions in personality development.
- The perceived quality of the parent-child relationship plays a significant role in shaping adolescent personality trajectories.
- Understanding these pathways is crucial for insights into personality development and potential psychopathology.
