Summary

Developing effective training programs requires a thorough Training Needs Analysis (TNA). This study introduces a new TNA approach for Automated Vehicle (AV) drivers, identifying over 100 essential Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes (KSAs).

  • To present a novel Training Needs Analysis (TNA) approach.
  • To demonstrate this new TNA method using an Automated Vehicle (AV) driver case study within the UK road system.

Main Methods:

  • Hierarchical Task Analysis (HTA) was employed to identify AV driver tasks, sub-tasks, and operations.
  • Six AV driver training themes were integrated with the Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes (KSA) taxonomy to define training needs.

Main Results:

  • The HTA identified 7 main tasks, 26 sub-tasks, and 2428 operations for AV drivers.
  • Over 100 distinct training needs (KSAs) were identified for AV drivers.
  • The new TNA approach identified more tasks, operations, and training needs compared to previous methods.

Conclusions:

  • A more comprehensive TNA for AV drivers was developed using the novel approach.
  • This detailed TNA can directly inform the creation and evaluation of future AV driver training programs.
