Fractures: Bone Repair01:27

Fractures: Bone Repair

3.4K
Treatment for a fracture is based on the type of break, the bone affected, and the patient's age.
Minor fractures with no bone displacement are treated by immobilizing the fractured bone using a cast or splint. However, in the case of fractures with displaced bones, the broken bones are repositioned before immobilization to ensure successful healing without deformation and loss of function. The realignment of fractured bone ends is performed through a process called reduction. If the...

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic surgery
  • Trauma surgery
  • Bone fracture repair

Background:

  • Dorsal spanning plate fixation is an option for comminuted distal radius fractures unsuitable for volar plating.
  • Limited outcomes data exist for this surgical technique.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the outcomes and complications associated with dorsal spanning plate fixation for distal radius fractures.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 43 distal radius fractures treated with dorsal spanning plates from 2014-2019.
  • Data collected included demographics, fracture patterns, fixation techniques, and clinical outcomes.

Main Results:

  • 84% of fractures were AO type C, 28% were open fractures.
  • One major complication (radius nonunion) occurred in 43 cases.
  • Mean wrist range of motion post-removal: 36° flexion, 48° extension, 75° pronation, 63° supination.

Conclusions:

  • Dorsal spanning plate fixation is a safe and effective treatment for complex distal radius fractures.
  • The study demonstrated good functional outcomes with a low complication rate.
