Summary

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) significantly improved physical fatigue in post-COVID syndrome patients. This non-invasive brain stimulation showed promise for managing long-term fatigue, with mild, transient side effects.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the efficacy of anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on fatigue severity in patients with post-COVID syndrome.
  • To evaluate the effects of tDCS on cognitive function, depressive symptoms, and quality of life.

Main Methods:

  • A double-blind, parallel-group, sham-controlled study involving 47 patients with post-COVID syndrome.
  • Active tDCS (2 mA, 20 min/day) applied to the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex for eight sessions.
  • Assessment of fatigue using the Modified Fatigue Impact Scale, with secondary outcomes including cognition, depression, and quality of life.

Main Results:

  • Active tDCS demonstrated a statistically significant improvement in physical fatigue compared to sham stimulation, both immediately post-treatment and at one-month follow-up.

Conclusions:

  • Anodal tDCS applied to the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex may be an effective intervention for improving physical fatigue in post-COVID syndrome.
  • Further research is warranted to validate these findings and refine tDCS protocols for optimal patient outcomes.
