    Background:

    • Thyroid function abnormalities are common in various illnesses.
    • Distinguishing cancer-specific thyroid changes from general non-thyroidal illness effects is crucial.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate thyroid function in breast cancer patients.
    • To compare thyroid function between breast cancer patients and various control groups.

    Main Methods:

    • Evaluated thyroid function in 226 breast cancer patients and control groups (other malignancies, benign breast disease, healthy donors).
    • Measured serum concentrations of total T3, total T4, and thyroid function index (TFI) using indirect (T3RU, T4/TBG) and direct free T4 methods.

    Main Results:

    • Breast cancer patients showed significantly higher mean serum total T3 and T4 levels than controls.
    • Mean TFI was significantly higher in breast cancer patients.
    • Elevated TFI correlated with high total T4, not abnormal thyroxine-binding globulin (TBG).
    • 3.5% of breast cancer patients were clinically hyperthyroid; no overt hypothyroidism observed.

    • Breast cancer is associated with a unique thyroid dysfunction, characterized by elevated TFI and total T4.
    • This thyroid dysfunction is distinct from the low T3 syndrome seen in non-thyroidal illnesses.
    • Thyroid function abnormalities in breast cancer patients do not correlate with disease spread (TNM stage).
