Insights
The COVID-19 pandemic altered cardiovascular emergency care, potentially causing collateral damage. This review examines changes in acute coronary syndrome rates and cardiovascular outcomes, highlighting the pandemic's impact.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Public Health
- Epidemiology
Background:
- The COVID-19 pandemic, beginning March 2020, significantly impacted healthcare delivery and patient behaviors.
- Cardiovascular emergencies represent a critical area affected by these pandemic-related changes.
- Potential for cardiovascular collateral damage due to altered treatment strategies and access to care.
Purpose of the Study:
- To review the evolving landscape of cardiac emergencies during the COVID-19 pandemic.
- To specifically analyze trends in acute coronary syndrome (ACS) rates.
- To assess the impact on cardiovascular mortality and morbidity.
Main Methods:
- Literature review focusing on the period following the March 2020 pandemic outbreak.
- Inclusion of recent and comprehensive meta-analyses on cardiovascular emergencies.
- Analysis of studies examining changes in ACS incidence and cardiovascular outcomes.
Main Results:
- The pandemic influenced the presentation and management of cardiovascular emergencies.
- Observed changes in the rates of acute coronary syndrome.
- Impact on overall cardiovascular mortality and morbidity documented.
Conclusions:
- The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated adaptations in cardiovascular emergency care.
- Understanding these changes is crucial for mitigating long-term cardiovascular consequences.
- Further research is needed to fully comprehend the pandemic's lasting effects on cardiovascular health.
Abstract:
The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020 influenced treatment strategies and behaviors, particularly cardiovascular emergencies, which may have led to cardiovascular collateral damage. This review article covers aspects of the changing spectrum of cardiac emergencies with a focus on acute coronary syndrome rates and cardiovascular mortality and morbidity based on a selected literature review including the most recent comprehensive meta-analyses.
