    Summary

A significant number of healthy, asymptomatic men exhibit upper gastrointestinal abnormalities. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy revealed common findings like erosive esophagitis, gastritis, and duodenitis in this population.

    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Internal Medicine
    • Clinical Research

    Background:

    • Asymptomatic individuals are often presumed to have a healthy upper gastrointestinal tract.
    • Screening endoscopy is typically reserved for symptomatic patients or specific risk factors.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine the prevalence of upper gastrointestinal abnormalities in asymptomatic male volunteers.
    • To identify common endoscopic findings in a healthy, young male population.

    Main Methods:

    • Prospective study involving 355 healthy male volunteers aged 18-45.
    • Esophagogastroduodenoscopy screening was performed prior to clinical trial admission.
    • Abnormal findings were documented by location and grade of lesion.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Main Results:

    • 134 volunteers (38%) presented with abnormal endoscopic findings.
    • Stomach involvement was observed in 24%, duodenum in 20%, and esophagus in 14%.
    • Prevalence rates included erosive esophagitis (8.5%), erosive gastritis (12%), erosive duodenitis (10%), gastric ulcer (2%), and duodenal ulcer (2%).

    Conclusions:

    • A substantial proportion of asymptomatic young men harbor upper gastrointestinal abnormalities.
    • These findings suggest a higher prevalence of subclinical gastrointestinal pathology than previously recognized.
    • Routine endoscopic screening in asymptomatic populations may reveal significant pathology.
