Implementing on-site genetic testing for prostate cancer significantly boosted patient compliance from 33.3% to 98.7%. This streamlined approach also reduced the time to receive genetic test results by 17 days, improving cancer care.

Background:

  • Genetic testing for prostate cancer evolved from National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines to the 2019 Philadelphia Consensus Conference guidelines.
  • The updated guidelines support point-of-care genetic testing and genetic counseling.
  • Limited data exist on the successful implementation of streamlined genetic testing processes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore the benefits of implementing an on-site, guideline-based genetic testing process for prostate cancer patients.
  • To assess the impact of guideline-based, on-site genetic testing on compliance and turnaround time.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 552 prostate cancer patients from January 2017.
  • Comparison of genetic testing compliance and turnaround time before and after September 2018.
  • Pre-September 2018: NCCN guidelines, off-site swab procurement (n=78).
  • Post-September 2018: Philadelphia Consensus Conference guidelines, on-site swab procurement (n=474).

Main Results:

  • Genetic testing compliance increased significantly from 33.3% to 98.7% after implementing on-site, guideline-based testing.
  • The average time to receive genetic test results decreased from 38 days to 21 days, a reduction of 17 days.

Conclusions:

  • On-site, guideline-based genetic testing significantly improves prostate cancer testing compliance and reduces result turnaround time.
  • This model enhances the detection of actionable mutations and increases the use of targeted therapies in prostate cancer management.
