Summary

Electroconvulsive therapy effectively treated a patient with hyperthyroidism presenting as agitated depression. Both psychological symptoms and thyroid dysfunction improved with treatment.

Background:

Hyperthyroidism can present with diverse psychiatric symptoms, including agitated depression.
The interplay between thyroid function and mental health is complex and warrants further investigation.

Observation:

A case study details a patient experiencing agitated depression secondary to hyperthyroidism.
The patient's psychiatric symptoms were severe and significantly impacted her quality of life.

Findings:

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) was administered to the patient.
Following ECT, the patient exhibited significant improvement in both her agitated depression and hyperthyroid state.

Implications:

This case suggests ECT may be a viable treatment option for psychiatric manifestations of hyperthyroidism.
