Contact-dependent Signaling01:19

Contact-dependent Signaling

44.8K
Contact-dependent signaling, as the name suggests, requires that communicating cells be in direct contact with each other. This is achieved either through receptor-ligand interactions or by specialized cytoplasmic channels that allow the flow of small molecules between cells. In animal cells, channels called gap junctions facilitate contact-dependent signaling in certain tissues, whereas, plasmodesmata perform a similar function in plants.

Area of Science:

  • Robotics
  • Human-Computer Interaction
  • Artificial Intelligence

Background:

  • Deaf individuals face communication barriers with hearing communities.
  • Sign language is crucial for expression and social integration.
  • Bridging this communication gap is vital for societal inclusion.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To propose a multimodal Chinese Sign Language (CSL) gesture interaction framework.
  • To enhance social integration for deaf individuals through improved communication.
  • To leverage social robots for CSL gesture recognition.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized a multimodal approach combining wearable Myo armband (sEMG) and Leap Motion sensor (hand 3D vectors).
  • Preprocessed and fused data from two sensor modalities to improve recognition.
  • Employed a long-short term memory recurrent neural network for classifying temporal gesture sequences.

Main Results:

  • Achieved improved Chinese Sign Language gesture recognition accuracy.
  • Demonstrated effective gesture interaction capabilities on an NAO robot.
  • Reduced processing time through data fusion.

Conclusions:

  • The proposed framework effectively improves CSL gesture recognition accuracy.
  • This technology has potential applications in various gesture interaction scenarios with social robots.
  • Facilitates better integration of deaf individuals into social life.
