Background:

  • Patients frequently adopt stooped postures after abdominal surgery to protect surgical wounds.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate and clarify the nature of postural changes in patients following abdominal surgery.
  • To assess the persistence and improvement of these postural alterations during the recovery phase.
  • To examine the relationship between spinal alignment changes and wound pain.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective cohort study including 25 patients undergoing abdominal surgery.
  • Spinal measurements (sacral tilt, lumbar lordosis, thoracic kyphosis, overall tilt) taken preoperatively, pre-discharge, and during the first outpatient visit.
  • Visual Analogue Scale used for wound pain assessment; statistical analyses included repeated measures ANOVA and Pearson correlation.

Main Results:

  • Lumbar kyphosis angle significantly decreased (became less curved) before discharge compared to preoperative measurements.

  • Abdominal surgery patients exhibit altered spinal alignment, specifically increased anterior tilt primarily due to lumbar spine changes, before hospital discharge.
  • These observed changes in spinal posture are not significantly associated with the level of wound pain experienced by patients.
  • Further research is needed to understand the long-term implications of these postural adaptations post-abdominal surgery.
