Behavioral Genetics and Its Designs01:23

Behavioral Genetics and Its Designs

436
Behavior genetics explores how genetic inheritance influences human behavior. It focuses on how genes, passed from parents to offspring, contribute to the development of behavioral traits and tendencies. This branch of genetics seeks to understand the complex interplay between inherited genetic factors and environmental influences in shaping our behaviors.
The primary methodologies used in behavior genetics include family studies, twin studies, and adoption studies, each providing unique...

Genome-wide Association Studies-GWAS

13.7K
Genome-wide association studies or GWAS are used to identify whether common SNPs are associated with certain diseases. Suppose specific SNPs are more frequently observed in individuals with a particular disease than those without the disease. In that case, those SNPs are said to be associated with the disease. Chi-square analysis is performed to check the probability of the allele likely to be associated with the disease.
GWAS does not require the identification of the target gene involved in...

Human Genetics

639
Human genetics provides a profound framework for understanding the interplay between genetic predispositions and human psychology. At the heart of this discipline lies the study of how genes influence physical traits, behaviors, and susceptibility to diseases. Each person carries a unique genetic code that subtly or significantly shapes their psychological and behavioral landscape.
The complex relationship between genetics and psychology is observable through common biological components such...

Summary

Camurati-Engelmann disease (CED) is a rare genetic disorder causing bone overgrowth. Early diagnosis through genetic testing and family history is key for effective treatment with Losartan, leading to pain relief.

Area of Science:

  • Genetics
  • Orthopedics
  • Rare Diseases

Background:

  • Camurati-Engelmann disease (CED) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by hyperostosis, limb pain, and muscle weakness.
  • Genetic mutations in the TGF Beta-1 gene on chromosome 19 are the cause of CED.
  • Diagnosis involves characteristic radiographic findings and molecular genetic testing for TGF Beta-1 mutations.

Observation:

  • A 40-year-old female presented with left lower limb pain and tenderness.
  • Imaging revealed sclerotic lesions and abnormal osteoblastic activity, with PET-CT showing hyperostosis suggestive of CED.
  • Family history of a sibling with a limp prompted further investigation.

Findings:

  • The patient tested positive for a TGF Beta-1 mutation, confirming the diagnosis of CED.

  • Her brother was also diagnosed with CED after evaluation for his childhood limp.
  • Treatment with Losartan resulted in complete pain relief for the patient.
  • Implications:

    • This case highlights the importance of considering family history in diagnosing rare genetic bone disorders like CED.
    • Early diagnosis and treatment with Losartan can effectively manage symptoms and improve patient quality of life.
    • Further research into TGF Beta-1 mutations and CED pathogenesis is warranted.
