Birth Control Methods01:22

Birth Control Methods

Vasectomy is a surgical form of male sterilization that involves severing and sealing the vasa deferentia, preventing sperm from mixing with semen during ejaculation. Because a vasectomy does not impact the testes' ability to produce testosterone, hormone levels, libido, and sexual function generally remain unchanged. While vasectomy is highly effective in preventing pregnancy, with a success rate near 99.85%, rare cases of recanalization (spontaneous reconnection) can occur. Although...

Gonadal and Placental Hormones

1.6K
The gonads, namely the testes in males and the ovaries in females, are pivotal in producing gonadal hormones that orchestrate the intricate processes of sexual development and reproduction.
In males, testosterone is the primary gonadal androgen. It plays a central role in the maturation of male reproductive organs — the penis and testes. Additionally, testosterone is instrumental in the development of secondary sexual characteristics — a deep voice as well as facial and pubic hair...

Nondepolarizing (Competitive) Neuromuscular Blockers: Pharmacokinetics

484
All neuromuscular blocking agents are injected intravenously because they are poorly absorbed from the GI tract. Rapid onset is achieved with intravenous administration, although absorption is also adequate from an intramuscular injection. Since these agents are highly ionized, they do not readily penetrate cell membranes or cross the blood-brain barrier.
Instead, they are transported by the blood to different tissues. Muscles with a greater blood supply (arteries) and blood flow receive more...

Drugs for Treatment of Constipation-Predominant IBS

244
Pharmacological therapies for IBS-C are designed to alleviate abdominal discomfort and enhance bowel function. In patients with IBS-C, fiber supplements may help soften stools and decrease straining, but may also lead to increased gas production and bloating. Osmotic laxatives like milk of magnesia are frequently used to soften stools and increase stool frequency in IBS-C patients. In addition, two drugs approved for use in severe IBS-C adult cases are linaclotide (Linzess) and lubiprostone...

Nondepolarizing (Competitive) Neuromuscular Blockers: Pharmacological Actions

471
Nondepolarizing neuromuscular blockers prevent the membrane depolarization of muscle cells and inhibit muscle contraction. These are usually administered with anesthetics to achieve complete muscle relaxation. Upon administration, these drugs first block the small, rapidly contracting muscles of the face and hands, followed by the larger muscles of the trunk and the intercostal muscles. The diaphragm is the last muscle to be affected.
Although all competitive neuromuscular blockers are designed...

Hormonal Regulation01:33

Hormonal Regulation

33.5K
The renin-aldosterone system is an endocrine system which guides the renal absorption of water and electrolytes, thus managing blood pressure and osmoregulation. Activation of the system begins in the kidneys with a small cluster of cells adjacent to the afferent and efferent blood vessels of the renal corpuscle. As the nephrons are filtering blood, juxtaglomerular cells monitor blood pressure. If they detect a decrease in pressure, they release the hormone renin into the bloodstream.

Summary

Physician knowledge of fertility awareness-based methods (FABMs) is limited, with accuracy varying by specialty. Improving this evidence-based knowledge can enhance patient-centered contraceptive care and reproductive autonomy.

Area of Science:

  • Reproductive Health
  • Medical Education

Background:

  • Fertility Awareness-Based Methods (FABMs) are effective family planning options when used correctly, with increasing patient demand.
  • FABMs are chosen for various reasons including medical necessity, personal preference, and religious beliefs.
  • Current medical curricula often inadequately cover FABMs, leading to physician misconceptions about their efficacy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess current physician knowledge and opinions regarding FABMs.
  • To identify areas for improvement in evidence-based understanding of FABMs among healthcare providers.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional survey was administered to physicians to evaluate their knowledge and perceptions of FABMs.
  • Data analysis included univariate and bivariate statistics for quantitative responses and thematic analysis for qualitative feedback.

Main Results:

  • Physician knowledge of FABMs varied, with OB/GYN and family medicine specialists scoring 55% accuracy, while internal medicine and pediatrics scored 36% and 35% respectively.
  • A range of opinions, from negative to positive, regarding FABMs were reported by participants.
  • Survey completion rates indicated a need for broader participation for more comprehensive data.

Conclusions:

  • Significant opportunities exist to enhance physicians' evidence-based knowledge of FABMs.
  • Improved physician understanding of FABMs can lead to better-informed patient counseling and shared decision-making.
  • Addressing knowledge gaps in FABMs supports comprehensive contraceptive care and reproductive justice.
