Background:

  • Gastrointestinal (GI) disorders represent a significant public health concern in the U.S.
  • Farmers, due to animal proximity, are considered a high-risk group for GI infections, though some evidence suggests protective effects of farm work.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between dairy farm work and the prevalence and severity of GI symptoms over a three-year period.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective, matched cohort study was conducted with 70 adult dairy farm workers and 74 matched non-farm participants in Wisconsin.
  • Gastrointestinal Symptoms Severity Index (GISSI), a 23-item questionnaire, was used to assess mean symptom scores for abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, dyspepsia, nausea, and reflux.

Main Results:

  • Dairy farm workers reported significantly lower mean GISSI scores for abdominal pain (p=.047), diarrhea (p=.010), constipation (p<.001), and dyspepsia (p=.026) compared to non-farm participants.
  • After adjusting for confounding variables, dairy farm work was associated with reduced severity of these specific GI symptoms.

Conclusions:

  • Working on a dairy farm is associated with a significant reduction in the frequency and severity of GI illness symptoms in adults.
  • Further research is needed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms, such as specific farm animal exposures and their impact on gut microbiota, which may inform novel therapeutic strategies for GI disorders.
