SARS-CoV-2-related bronchiolitis: a multicentre international study.

Severe bronchiolitis in infants is uncommon with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Infants with COVID-19 related bronchiolitis required less respiratory support than those with other viral infections.

- A multicentre retrospective study involving 22 European and Israeli pediatric emergency departments.
- Collected data on demographic, clinical, diagnostic, treatment, and outcome information for infants diagnosed with bronchiolitis.
- Included infants tested for SARS-CoV-2 between May 2021 and February 2022.
Main Results:
- Out of 2004 infants with bronchiolitis, 95 (4.7%) tested positive for SARS-CoV-2.
- SARS-CoV-2 positive infants required less oxygen supplementation (39% vs 56.4%) and ventilatory support (12.6% high flow nasal cannulae, 1.0% CPAP) compared to SARS-CoV-2 negative infants.
- No significant differences in age, gender, weight, prematurity, or comorbidities were observed between the groups.
Conclusions:
- SARS-CoV-2 is an infrequent cause of bronchiolitis in infants.
- Bronchiolitis associated with SARS-CoV-2 generally presents with a milder clinical course, requiring less respiratory support.
