Kidney function in acromegaly.

P C Eskildsen, H H Parving, C E Mogensen

    Acta Medica Scandinavica. Supplementum
    |January 1, 1979
    PubMed
    Summary

Patients with acromegaly showed elevated creatinine clearance, but this did not correlate with disease activity. Kidney function markers remained unchanged after bromocriptine treatment, despite reduced urinary growth hormone excretion.

    Area of Science:

    • Endocrinology
    • Nephrology
    • Biochemistry

    Background:

    • Acromegaly, a condition caused by excess growth hormone, can affect kidney function.
    • Previous studies suggest potential alterations in renal parameters in acromegaly patients.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate kidney function in acromegaly patients.
    • To assess the impact of bromocriptine treatment on renal parameters and disease activity.

    Main Methods:

    • Measured creatinine clearance, urinary albumin, and beta2-microglobulin excretion in 14 acromegaly patients.
    • Assessed disease activity via urinary growth hormone excretion.
    • Analyzed data before and during bromocriptine treatment (5-55 mg/day).

    Main Results:

    • Elevated creatinine clearance was observed in acromegaly patients.
    • No significant correlation was found between creatinine clearance and urinary growth hormone excretion.
    • Urinary albumin and beta2-microglobulin excretion rates were comparable to control subjects.
    • Bromocriptine treatment significantly reduced urinary growth hormone excretion (p < 0.01) but did not alter kidney function variables.

    Conclusions:

    • Acromegaly is associated with elevated creatinine clearance, independent of disease activity.
    • Bromocriptine effectively reduces growth hormone levels but does not significantly impact kidney function markers in these patients.
