Background:

  • Cinematic-virtual reality (cine-VR) has shown benefits for healthcare providers but its effect on health professional students is not well-documented.
  • This study investigated the feasibility and impact of a cine-VR diabetes training program on health professional students' cultural self-efficacy, diabetes attitudes, and empathy.

Observation:

  • Participants engaged with 12 cine-VR simulations depicting a patient with type 2 diabetes.
  • Pre- and post-training assessments utilized validated tools: Transcultural Self-Efficacy Tool, Diabetes Attitude Scale-3, and Jefferson Scale of Empathy.
  • The training was feasible, with all 92 participants completing it without technological issues or adverse events.

Findings:

  • Significant improvements were observed in all three subscales of cultural self-efficacy (Cognitive, Practical, Affective).
  • Positive changes were noted in four of five diabetes attitude subscales, including 'Need for special training,' 'Seriousness of type 2 diabetes,' 'Psychosocial impact of diabetes,' and 'Attitude toward patient autonomy.'
  • A notable enhancement in empathy was also recorded among the participating health professional students.

Implications:

  • The cine-VR diabetes training program demonstrates potential for enhancing key competencies in health professional students.
  • Results suggest cine-VR is a viable tool for improving cultural competence, attitudes towards diabetes, and empathy in future healthcare providers.
  • Further validation through a randomized controlled trial is recommended to confirm the effectiveness of this innovative training approach.
