  • To evaluate the effectiveness of standardizing dietary intake and physical activity for 24 hours prior to BIA.
  • To assess the impact of this standardization protocol on the precision of body composition measurements.

Main Methods:

  • Eighteen recreational athletes (10 male, 8 female) participated in the study.
  • Three BIA tests were conducted: two on the same day and one on a subsequent day.
  • Participants replicated all food, fluid intake, and physical activity for 24 hours preceding each BIA scan.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences were found in within-day versus between-day precision error for fat-free mass, fat mass, and total body water.
  • Precision error for fat-free mass and total body water fell below the smallest effect size of interest, indicating improved precision.

Conclusions:

  • Standardizing diet and physical activity for 24 hours appears to be a viable method for enhancing BIA precision.
  • Further research is needed to validate this protocol against non-standardized or randomized intake methods.
