    Summary

Patients abstaining from alcohol or drinking minimally showed higher coronary artery occlusion scores. Moderate alcohol consumption was associated with lower occlusion levels in this study.

    Area of Science:

    • Cardiovascular Science
    • Epidemiology

    Background:

    • Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a leading cause of mortality worldwide.
    • The role of lifestyle factors, including alcohol consumption, in CAD progression requires further elucidation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the association between alcohol intake levels and the severity of coronary artery occlusion.
    • To determine if different patterns of alcohol consumption correlate with varying degrees of atherosclerosis.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of patient data.
    • Quantification of coronary artery occlusion severity.
    • Categorization of patients based on weekly alcohol consumption.

    Main Results:

    • Patients abstaining from alcohol exhibited significantly higher coronary artery occlusion scores.
    • Individuals consuming less than 1 ounce of alcohol weekly also presented with higher occlusion scores.
    • Moderate alcohol consumption was linked to comparatively lower occlusion scores.

    Conclusions:

    • Alcohol abstinence or very low intake may be associated with increased coronary artery occlusion.
    • Moderate alcohol consumption might have a protective effect against the extent of coronary artery occlusion.
    • Further research is warranted to confirm these findings and understand the underlying mechanisms.
