Nucleic Acid Structure01:25

Nucleic Acid Structure

6.2K
The pentose sugar in DNA is deoxyribose, while in RNA the pentose sugar is ribose. The difference between the sugars is the presence of the hydroxyl group on the ribose's second carbon and a hydrogen on the deoxyribose's second carbon. The phosphate residue attaches to the hydroxyl group of the 5′ carbon of one sugar and the hydroxyl group of the 3′ carbon of the sugar of the next nucleotide, which forms  a 5′ to 3′ phosphodiester linkage.

Protein Complexes with Interchangeable Parts

2.6K
Groups of proteins may form a complex where each protein in this complex has a different role in the overall execution of the complex’s function. Often some of the proteins in the complex can be replaced by a closely related variant to give a complex that contains many of the same components yet is functionally distinct.
The SCF ubiquitin ligase is a protein complex of five individual proteins. This complex attaches ubiquitin to other target proteins to mark them for degradation. In order...

Nucleic Acids and Nucleotides

9.1K
Nucleic acids are the most important macromolecules for the continuity of life. They carry the cell's genetic blueprint and have instructions for its functioning. The two main types of nucleic acids are deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acid (RNA).
Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA)
DNA is the genetic material in all living organisms, ranging from single-celled bacteria to multicellular mammals. It is in the nucleus of eukaryotes and the organelles such as chloroplasts and mitochondria....

Area of Science:

  • Structural biology
  • Bioinformatics
  • Genomics

Background:

  • Quadruplexes are significant four-stranded DNA/RNA motifs with complex 3D folds.
  • They regulate genomic processes and are key targets for drug development.
  • Automated tools for analyzing quadruplex 3D structures are limited.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To introduce WebTetrado, a novel web server for analyzing 3D quadruplex structures.
  • To provide a user-friendly platform for automatic identification, annotation, classification, and visualization of quadruplex motifs.
  • To support analysis of both experimental and in silico generated structures.

Main Methods:

  • Development of a web server named WebTetrado.
  • Implementation of algorithms for automatic identification, annotation, classification, and visualization of quadruplexes.
  • Support for PDB and PDBx/mmCIF file formats for 3D models.

Main Results:

  • WebTetrado offers an intuitive interface for analyzing quadruplex structures.
  • The server supports canonical G-quadruplexes and non-G-based quartets.
  • It can process unimolecular, bimolecular, and tetramolecular quadruplexes.

Conclusions:

  • WebTetrado provides a valuable resource for researchers studying quadruplex structures.
  • The tool facilitates a deeper understanding of the functional significance of quadruplexes.
  • It is freely accessible as a public web server.
