Sexual dysfunction is common in people with multiple sclerosis (MS). The Multiple Sclerosis Intimacy and Sexuality Questionnaire-19 (MSISQ-19) is an effective tool for assessing sexual health in MS patients.
Area of Science:
- Neurology
- Sexual Medicine
- Psychiatry
Background:
- People with multiple sclerosis (PwMS) experience a higher risk of sexual dysfunction (SD), affecting both women and men.
- Sexual health is a critical aspect of quality of life for individuals with chronic neurological conditions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To apply the Multiple Sclerosis Intimacy and Sexuality Questionnaire-19 (MSISQ-19) to assess sexual function in PwMS.
- To compare study findings with existing literature.
- To evaluate the usability of the MSISQ-19 and patient engagement in discussing sexuality.
Main Methods:
- A web-based Google form questionnaire, including the MSISQ-19, was used for online data collection.
- Baseline characteristics were analyzed using descriptive statistics (proportions, mean ± SD, median ± IQR).
- Categorical variables were stratified by sex and analyzed using chi-squared tests; statistical analyses were performed using STATA v. 16.
Main Results:
- Out of 621 respondents, 541 were included in the analysis.
- A significant proportion of patients with MS (64.14%, n=347) reported sexual dysfunction.
- The frequency of SD did not significantly differ between genders.
Conclusions:
- High incidence of sexual dysfunction among PwMS necessitates further investigation into causes and development of treatment strategies.
- The MSISQ-19 offers a quick and user-friendly method for clinicians to assess sexual functioning.
- The questionnaire empowers patients to discuss sexual health concerns and seek appropriate support.
