Background:

The Veterans Health Administration (VA) STAR-VA program targets distress behaviors in dementia care within Community Living Centers (CLCs).
Sustaining the STAR-VA program is challenging due to frequent turnover of site-lead partners.
A Sustainment Coaching Program was developed to support new site leads and facilitate the implementation of sustainment strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the STAR-VA Sustainment Coaching pilot program.
To document sustainment needs, barriers, facilitators, and effective strategies for the STAR-VA program.
To assess the impact of coaching on sustaining person-centered dementia care in CLCs.

Main Methods:

A pilot program evaluation involving eight CLC teams.
Utilized qualitative and quantitative data collection methods.
Included needs assessments, goal setting, tracking of interventions, and outcome reporting, with thematic analysis of qualitative data.

Main Results:

Common needs included training new staff, enhancing dementia understanding, and fostering person-centered care culture.
Barriers comprised staff time, turnover, and lack of resources; facilitators included leadership support and staff interest.
STAR-VA behavior rounds were largely successful, but training-related goal achievement varied.
