In open-angle glaucoma, the iridocorneal angle remains open, but the trabecular meshwork becomes stiff, slowing down the outflow of aqueous humor. This causes a buildup of aqueous humor in the anterior chamber, leading to a sudden increase in intraocular pressure.     The PanOptix Toric intraocular lens (IOL) provides excellent uncorrected vision at near, intermediate, and distance for patients undergoing refractive lens exchange (RLE). This study shows high rates of visual acuity and refractive accuracy, confirming its effectiveness.

    Background:

    • Refractive lens exchange (RLE) is an alternative to LASIK for vision correction.
    • Toric intraocular lenses (IOLs) correct astigmatism during cataract and refractive surgery.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the outcomes of a new toric trifocal intraocular lens (IOL) for refractive lens exchange (RLE).
    • To assess the effectiveness of the PanOptix Toric IOL in eyes with corneal astigmatism.

    Main Methods:

    • A consecutive series of eyes undergoing RLE with the PanOptix Toric IOL were analyzed.
    • Outcomes included uncorrected visual acuities (UDVA, UIVA, UNVA), refractive error, and vector analysis of IOL accuracy.

    Main Results:

    • High percentages of eyes achieved excellent uncorrected distance, intermediate, and near visual acuities.
    • The IOL demonstrated high accuracy in correcting refractive error and astigmatism, with a high percentage of eyes within 0.50 D of target.
    • Low rates of secondary enhancement procedures were observed at 3 and 12 months post-RLE.

    Conclusions:

    • The PanOptix Toric IOL is effective for RLE across various axial lengths and corneal astigmatism.
    • Patients achieved satisfactory uncorrected binocular vision for daily activities.
