Anxiety: Overview

317
Anxiety is a common mental disorder featuring excessive worry, fear, and apprehension, significantly affecting daily life. People with anxiety disorders experience persistent and intense anxiety, interrupting their everyday functioning.
Individuals with anxiety often experience a range of physical and emotional symptoms, including sweating, trembling, tachycardia, and disturbances in sleep patterns. These symptoms vary in intensity and frequency but are generally disruptive and distressing.

Social Anxiety Disorder01:28

Social Anxiety Disorder

67
Social anxiety disorder, also known as social phobia, is characterized by an intense fear of social situations where one might face humiliation, rejection, embarrassment, or negative evaluation. This disorder leads individuals to avoid activities like casual conversations, public speaking, or seemingly simple tasks such as eating, signing documents, or swimming, in public settings. Its impact extends beyond discomfort, often significantly interfering with daily functioning and quality of life.

Imaging Studies III: Gastrointestinal Motility Studies and Virtual Colonoscopy

120
This lesson explores three gastrointestinal imaging techniques: radionuclide testing, colonic transit studies, and virtual colonoscopy.
Radionuclide Testing
Radionuclide testing is a sophisticated medical technique for assessing gastrointestinal motility. It focuses on gastric emptying and colonic transit time. Radioactive markers track the movement of food through the digestive system, providing insights into gastrointestinal disorders.
In gastric emptying studies, a meal's liquid and...

Generalized Anxiety Disorder01:30

Generalized Anxiety Disorder

170
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is a chronic condition characterized by excessive and uncontrollable worry that persists for at least six months, significantly interfering with daily functioning. Unlike situational anxiety, which arises in response to specific stressors, GAD often occurs without a clear cause. Individuals may experience disproportionate worry about work, health, or relationships. For instance, a person might continuously fear poor health despite normal medical evaluations or...

Summary

Virtual reality (VR) headsets did not improve patient satisfaction or reduce anxiety during colposcopy procedures. This study found no significant difference in outcomes between women using VR and those in the control group.

Area of Science:

  • Gynecologic Oncology
  • Medical Technology
  • Patient Experience

Background:

  • Colposcopy and cervical biopsy are procedures for diagnosing cervical squamous intraepithelial lesions.
  • Patient anxiety and satisfaction are key factors in the medical experience.
  • Virtual reality (VR) technology is increasingly explored for its potential to mitigate procedural anxiety.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of headset-delivered virtual reality (VR) content on patient satisfaction and anxiety during colposcopy with cervical biopsy.
  • To compare outcomes between women undergoing colposcopy with and without VR intervention.

Main Methods:

  • A single-center, randomized trial involving 247 women with suspected cervical squamous intraepithelial lesions.
  • Participants were assigned to either a control group (no VR) or VR headset groups (before or before and during colposcopy).
  • Key measures included overall satisfaction (visual analog scale) and situational anxiety (STAI-S), with secondary endpoints on pain, discomfort, and follow-up parameters.

Main Results:

  • No statistically significant differences were observed in overall satisfaction between the VR and control groups (p = .92).
  • Situational anxiety levels showed no significant improvement with VR intervention (p = .09).
  • Secondary outcomes such as pain, discomfort, and follow-up measures also did not differ significantly between the groups.

Conclusions:

  • Headset-delivered virtual reality content does not appear to enhance satisfaction or reduce anxiety in women undergoing colposcopy and cervical biopsy.
  • The findings suggest that VR, in this specific application, does not offer a significant benefit for patients undergoing this gynecological procedure.
