Taste Buds and Receptors

2.3K
Gustation, or the sense of taste, is intrinsically linked to the anatomical structures located on the tongue. This organ's surface, along with the entirety of the oral cavity, is adorned with stratified squamous epithelium. Evident on the tongue are elevated structures known as papillae (singular = papilla), which house the mechanisms for the transduction of gustatory stimuli. Four distinct types of papillae exist, each identified by their unique morphological attributes: the circumvallate,...

Hearing

When we hear a sound, our nervous system is detecting sound waves—pressure waves of mechanical energy traveling through a medium. The frequency of the wave is perceived as pitch, while the amplitude is perceived as loudness.

Summary

Self-perceived hearing handicap significantly increases the risk of food insecurity in adults. Food insecurity, in turn, is linked to both hearing handicap and objectively measured hearing loss, highlighting a bidirectional relationship.

Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Public Health
  • Audiology

Background:

  • Food insecurity is a growing public health concern with significant social and economic implications.
  • Hearing loss is a prevalent condition in older adults, often associated with reduced quality of life.
  • The interplay between hearing health and food security remains underexplored, particularly concerning self-perceived versus objectively measured hearing impairment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the independent associations between objectively measured hearing loss, self-perceived hearing handicap, and food insecurity in adults.
  • To examine the bidirectional relationship between hearing status and food security.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional, population-based study of 2,500 adults aged 50 years and older.
  • Hearing loss was objectively measured using pure-tone audiometry (PTA0.5-4KHz >25 dB HL).
  • Self-perceived hearing handicap was assessed using the Hearing Handicap Inventory for Elderly Screening (HHIE-S), and food security status was determined via a 12-item survey.

Main Results:

  • 12.8% of participants reported food insecurity.
  • Self-perceived hearing handicap was independently associated with a 94% increased likelihood of food insecurity (p<0.0001).
  • Objectively measured hearing loss did not show a significant association with food insecurity, but food insecurity was linked to both hearing loss and handicap.

Conclusions:

  • Self-perceived hearing handicap is a significant predictor of food insecurity among community-dwelling adults.
  • Food insecurity acts as a social determinant of hearing health, influencing both perceived and objective hearing status.
  • Findings underscore the public health importance of addressing both food insecurity and hearing loss, suggesting potential intervention points.
