    Background:

    • Portal systemic encephalopathy (PSE) is a serious complication of liver disease.
    • Current treatments for PSE have limitations.
    • Congenital hyperammonemia in children is effectively treated with sodium benzoate and sodium phenylacetate.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of sodium benzoate and sodium phenylacetate in treating adults with PSE.
    • To assess the impact of these compounds on ammonia levels and mental status in PSE patients.

    Main Methods:

    • A double-blind, cross-over study design was employed.
    • Each patient served as their own control.
    • Patients received either sodium benzoate and sodium phenylacetate or conventional therapy (lactulose or neomycin).
