Background:

  • Simulation-based training (SBT) for flexible bronchoscopy (FB) skills has grown in popularity for novice trainees.
  • The effectiveness of SBT for FB and its key instructional features remain unclear.

Approach:

  • A systematic literature search was conducted across major databases (Embase, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science) up to November 2022.
  • Included studies were assessed for methodological quality and risk of bias.
  • Instructional features and outcome measures were analyzed to identify correlations with training effectiveness.

Key Points:

  • 14 studies were included, with 11 reporting positive effects of FB SBT.
  • However, 8 studies had moderate to high risk of bias, and only 6 were of high quality.
  • Curriculum integration and varied task difficulty were noted in high-quality studies with relevant outcomes.

Conclusions:

  • While many studies suggest positive outcomes, definitive conclusions on FB SBT effectiveness in patient settings are limited.
  • Heterogeneity in training features and sparse evidence on validated behavioral outcomes hinder firm conclusions.
  • Further research focusing on patient-centered outcomes is warranted to establish the true impact of FB SBT.
