Nursing Evaluation01:15

Nursing Evaluation

3.4K
The evaluation stage signals the end of the nursing process. The nurse gathers evaluative data to assess whether or not the patient has attained the expected results. Whereas the nurse collects data in the nursing assessment to identify the patient's health concerns, the evaluation stage data determines if the indicated health issues are resolved. Evaluative data collection includes two sections: the data acquired to evaluate patient outcomes and the time criteria for data collection.

Positron Emission Tomography01:29

Positron Emission Tomography

4.3K
Positron emission tomography (PET) is a medical imaging technique involving radiopharmaceuticals — substances that emit short-lived radiation. Although the first PET scanner was introduced in 1961, it took 15 more years before radiopharmaceuticals were combined with the technique and revolutionized its potential.
One of the main requirements of a PET scan is a positron-emitting radioisotope, which is produced in a cyclotron and then attached to a substance used by the part of the body...

Radiological Investigation I: X-ray and CT

306
Radiological investigations, including X-rays and computed tomography (CT) scans, are critical for diagnosing and evaluating various medical conditions. These imaging techniques provide valuable insights into the body's internal structures, aiding in the detection of abnormalities, assessment of disease progression, and development of treatment strategies. This article delves into two primary radiological investigations, chest X-rays and CT scans, outlining their purpose, procedures, and...

Radiological Investigation II: MRI and Ventilation Perfusion Scan

161
Description
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Ventilation Perfusion Scans are two radiological investigations that offer detailed diagnostic images of the body, particularly lung structures.
MRI
MRI uses magnetic fields and radiofrequency signals to distinguish between normal and abnormal tissues. This technology provides a more detailed diagnostic image than CT scans, enabling it to characterize pulmonary nodules, stage bronchogenic carcinoma, and evaluate inflammatory activity in...

Radiation: Applications

1.2K
The average temperature of Earth is the subject of much current discussion. Earth is in radiative contact with both the Sun and dark space; it receives almost all its energy from the radiation of the Sun and reflects some of it into outer space. Dark space is very cold, about 3 K, so Earth radiates energy into it. For instance, heat transfer occurs from soil and grasses, the rate of which can be so rapid that frost can occur on clear summer evenings, even in warm latitudes.
The average...

Radiological Investigation III: Pulmonary Angiogram and PET Scan

120
Radiological investigations are paramount in the diagnosis and management of various pulmonary diseases. Two essential investigations are the Pulmonary Angiogram and the Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Scan.
Pulmonary Angiogram
A Pulmonary Angiogram is an invasive procedure involving injecting a contrast medium through a catheter threaded into the pulmonary artery or the right side of the heart to visualize the pulmonary vasculature. Computed Tomography (CT) scans have mainly replaced this...

Summary

Familiarity with radiation oncology resident evaluations does not predict their perceived usefulness or impact on behavior. Despite low familiarity, most residents find current evaluation methods valuable for practice improvement.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Radiation Oncology
  • Assessment Methods

Background:

  • Current assessment methods in radiation oncology (RO) residency are varied.
  • Resident perceptions of these methods are crucial for effective training.
  • Familiarity with evaluation tools may influence their perceived utility and impact.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze characteristics of existing assessment methods in RO.
  • To report resident perceptions of these evaluation methods.
  • To determine if familiarity with evaluations predicts perceived utility and behavioral changes.

Main Methods:

  • Phase 1: Analyzed evaluation forms from 13 RO residency programs assessing 6 Core Competencies.
  • Phase 2: Surveyed RO residents on familiarity with Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Milestones and perceptions of current methods.
  • Statistical analyses included ANOVA and linear regression models.

Main Results:

  • Evaluation forms varied in question count, with significant institutional differences in assessing competencies.
  • A majority of residents reported low familiarity with competencies (59.6%) and assessment factors (73.1%).
  • Familiarity with evaluation methods did not significantly predict perceived usefulness, likelihood of change, intimidation, or stress.

Conclusions:

  • Familiarity with evaluation methods is not correlated with resident perceptions or behavioral changes.
  • Further investigation into alternative predictor variables for evaluation effectiveness is needed.
  • Despite low familiarity, residents generally perceive current evaluation methods as useful and likely to influence practice.
