Abnormal Proliferation02:23

Abnormal Proliferation

4.6K
Under normal conditions, most adult cells remain in a non-proliferative state unless stimulated by internal or external factors to replace lost cells. Abnormal cell proliferation is a condition in which the cell's growth exceeds and is uncoordinated with normal cells. In such situations, cell division persists in the same excessive manner even after cessation of the stimuli, leading to persistent tumors. The tumor arises from the damaged cells that replicate to pass the damage to the...

The Intrinsic Apoptotic Pathway01:31

The Intrinsic Apoptotic Pathway

6.7K
Internal cellular stress, such as cellular injury or hypoxia, triggers intrinsic apoptosis. The B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2) family of proteins are the primary regulators of the intrinsic apoptotic pathway. For example, during DNA damage, checkpoint proteins, such as Ataxia Telangiectasia Mutated (ATM protein) and Checkpoints Factor-2 (Chk2) proteins, are activated. These proteins phosphorylate p53 which further activates pro-apoptotic proteins, such as Bax, Bak, PUMA, and Noxa, and inhibits...

Summary

B-cell leukemia/lymphoma 11A (BCL11A) is upregulated in breast cancer (BC) compared to normal tissue. Its expression decreases with higher tumor grade and smaller tumor size, suggesting a role in BC development.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Molecular Biology
  • Genetics

Background:

  • B-cell leukemia/lymphoma 11A (BCL11A) is a transcription factor regulating cell division and apoptosis.
  • Elevated BCL11A expression is linked to poorer prognosis in various cancers.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate BCL11A expression patterns in breast cancer (BC) and mastopathy.
  • To correlate BCL11A expression with clinicopathological data in BC.

Main Methods:

  • Immunohistochemistry (IHC) for BCL11A protein in 200 BC and 13 mastopathy samples.
  • Real-time PCR for BCL11A mRNA in 22 BC and 6 mastopathy samples.
  • Analysis of BCL11A in BC cell lines at protein and mRNA levels.

Main Results:

  • BCL11A expression was higher in BC than in mastopathy.
  • BCL11A levels decreased with increasing histological grade and primary tumor size in BC.
  • Lower BCL11A expression was observed in estrogen/progesterone receptor-negative and triple-negative BC.

Conclusions:

  • BCL11A expression is altered in breast cancer.
  • BCL11A may play a role in breast cancer development and progression.
  • BCL11A's correlation with clinicopathological features warrants further investigation.
