Atomic Force Microscopy01:08

Atomic Force Microscopy

3.5K
Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is a type of scanning probe microscopy that can analyze topographic details of various specimens like ceramics, glass, polymers, and biological samples. AFM offers over 1000 times more resolution than the optical imaging system. Images generated from AFM are three-dimensional surface profiles, offering an advantage over the flat, two-dimensional images from other imaging techniques.

Scanning Electron Microscopy

4.3K
A scanning electron microscope (SEM) is used to study the surface features of a sample by using an electron beam that scans the sample surface in a two-dimensional manner. Typically, areas between ~1 centimeter to 5 micrometers in width can be imaged. SEM can be used to image bacteria, viruses, tissues as well as larger samples like insects. Conventional SEM gives a magnification ranging from 20X to 30,000X and spatial resolution of 50 to 100 nanometers.

Summary

The WaveOne reciprocating file system showed better root canal cleaning than the F360 continuous motion file system, especially in the coronal and middle thirds. However, both systems struggled with debris removal in the apical third of the root canal.

Area of Science:

  • Endodontics
  • Dental Materials Science
  • Biomaterials

Background:

  • Biomechanical preparation, disinfection, and obturation are critical in endodontic treatment.
  • The smear layer and debris identification are aided by electron microscopy techniques.
  • Assessing root canal cleaning efficacy is crucial for successful endodontic outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the cleaning and contouring efficacy of two single-file systems: WaveOne (reciprocating) and F360 (continuous motion).
  • To evaluate the removal of smear layer and debris in different root canal thirds using scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

Main Methods:

  • Fifty extracted maxillary central incisors were divided into two groups: WaveOne (Group A) and F360 (Group B).
  • Root canals were prepared according to manufacturer's instructions for each file system.
  • SEM was used to assess smear layer and debris at coronal, middle, and apical thirds.

Main Results:

  • Both WaveOne and F360 systems were more effective in cleaning coronal and middle thirds compared to the apical third.
  • The WaveOne system demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in debris compared to the F360 system across all root thirds.
  • WaveOne showed more extensive smear layer removal in coronal and middle thirds, but less in the apical third compared to F360.

Conclusions:

  • Both WaveOne and F360 single-file systems exhibit limitations in completely cleaning the apical third of root canals.
  • The WaveOne system, with its reciprocating motion, offers superior debris removal in the coronal and middle thirds compared to the F360 system.
  • Further research may be needed to optimize apical debris removal with single-file systems.
