Mesenchymal Stem Cells01:19

Mesenchymal Stem Cells

4.8K
Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are adult stem cells that can differentiate into most connective tissue cell types, except for hematopoietic cells, depending upon the source of MSCs. For example, bone-marrow-derived MSCs (BM-MSCs) can differentiate into osteocytes, hepatocytes, and pancreatic and neuronal cells. MSCs can be isolated from various sources such as bone marrow, placenta, adipose tissue, teeth, and Wharton’s jelly, a gelatinous substance in the umbilical cord. The ease of their...

Regulation of Angiogenesis and Blood Supply01:24

Regulation of Angiogenesis and Blood Supply

2.6K
Rapidly dividing tumors, embryos, and wounded tissues require more oxygen than usual, lowering the oxygen concentration in the blood. At low oxygen or hypoxic conditions, an oxygen-sensitive transcription factor called the hypoxia-inducible factor 1 or HIF1 is activated. HIF1 is a dimeric protein of alpha (ɑ) and beta (β) subunits.  Under optimal oxygen conditions, HIF1β is present in the nucleus while HIF1ɑ remains in the cytosol. HIF1ɑ is hydroxylated by prolyl...

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Stem Cell Biology
  • Gastroenterology

Background:

  • Gastric cancer (GC) treatment seeks personalized therapies.
  • Extracellular vesicle microRNAs are potential GC biomarkers.
  • Helicobacter pylori infection impacts GC development and treatment response.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Investigate mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) effects on GC tumor neovascularization.
  • Explore MSCs and their secreted extracellular vesicles (e.g., exosomes) for antiangiogenic therapies in GC.
  • Understand the role of bone marrow-derived MSCs in the GC tumor microenvironment.

Main Methods:

  • Reviewing existing literature on MSCs in GC.
  • Analyzing the pro- and anti-angiogenic properties of MSCs from various sources.
  • Examining the influence of MSCs on tumor vasculature and resistance to antiangiogenic drugs.

Main Results:

  • MSCs have shown promise in gastric ulcer healing and are being studied for their impact on GC neovascularization.
  • The migration of bone marrow-derived MSCs into GC tissues suggests a role in angiogenic modulation.
  • MSCs exhibit both pro- and anti-angiogenic effects, alongside immune regulation and tissue regeneration capabilities.

Conclusions:

  • MSCs represent a potential therapeutic avenue for GC, particularly through modulating tumor angiogenesis.
  • Further research into the heterogeneous effects of MSCs is crucial for understanding GC biology and developing effective treatments.
  • Investigating MSC-derived extracellular vesicles may offer novel biomarkers and therapeutic strategies for GC.
