Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effect of subclinical hyperthyroidism on voice quality.
  • To compare acoustic voice parameters between patients with subclinical hyperthyroidism and healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional comparative study was conducted with 60 patients and 55 healthy volunteers.
  • Acoustic voice analysis measured fundamental frequency (F0), jitter, shimmer, relative average perturbation (RAP), noise-to-harmonic ratio (NHR), and voice turbulence index (VTI).
  • Participants were recruited from a tertiary care hospital between January and June 2020.

Main Results:

  • No statistically significant differences were observed in F0, jitter, RAP, shimmer, NHR, or VTI between the subclinical hyperthyroidism group and the control group (p>0.05).
  • Specific acoustic values for the patient group were F0 224.97%, jitter 0.85%, RAP 0.51%, shimmer 3.16%, NHR 0.12 dB, and VTI 0.047.
  • Corresponding values for the control group were F0 219.60%, jitter 0.74%, RAP 0.46%, shimmer 3.11%, NHR 0.12 dB, and VTI 0.045.

Conclusions:

  • Subclinical hyperthyroidism does not appear to cause significant alterations in voice quality as assessed by acoustic analysis.
  • Further research may explore potential long-term effects or subtle voice changes not captured by current acoustic measures.
