    Summary

Moderate to severe facial dyskinesia in psychiatric patients with functional disorders was linked to shorter survival times. Mild facial dyskinesia and dyskinesia in organic brain syndromes did not show this association.

    Area of Science:

    • Psychiatry
    • Neurology
    • Epidemiology

    Background:

    • Facial dyskinesia is an involuntary movement disorder that can affect psychiatric patients.
    • Previous research has not fully elucidated the long-term survival implications of facial dyskinesia in this population.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the association between facial dyskinesia and survival time in a cohort of psychiatric in-patients.
    • To differentiate the impact of dyskinesia severity and underlying psychiatric diagnosis on life expectancy.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective survival analysis of a 1965 cohort of psychiatric in-patients.
    • Assessment of facial dyskinesia prevalence and severity.
    • Correlation of dyskinesia with survival data, stratified by diagnostic group (functional disorders vs. organic brain syndromes).

    Main Results:

    • A significant association was found between moderate to severe facial dyskinesia and shortened survival in patients with functional disorders (primarily schizophrenia).
    • No clear clinical factors explained this reduced survival.
    • Mild facial dyskinesia in functional disorders was not linked to reduced life expectancy, suggesting age-related effects.
    • Dyskinesia in patients with primary organic brain syndromes did not correlate with reduced survival.

    Conclusions:

    • Moderate to severe facial dyskinesia may be a marker for increased mortality risk in patients with functional psychiatric disorders.
    • The findings suggest a potential link between specific movement disorders and prognosis in schizophrenia.
    • Further research is needed to understand the underlying mechanisms and potential interventions.
