    Background:

    • The blood-ocular barrier (BOB) is crucial for maintaining ocular health.
    • Diabetic retinopathy is a leading cause of blindness, but early detection of BOB alterations is challenging.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate early changes in the blood-ocular barrier in diabetic non-human primates before the onset of retinopathy.
    • To assess the utility of ocular fluorophotometry in detecting subclinical BOB dysfunction.

    Main Methods:

    • Ocular fluorophotometry was employed in normal and diabetic rhesus monkeys.
    • Vitreous and anterior chamber fluorescein levels were measured and normalized.
    • Animals included insulin-dependent (pancreatectomized, streptozotocin-treated) and non-insulin-dependent diabetic models, alongside controls.
