Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify the primary causes of injuries sustained during sauna bathing.
  • To determine the body regions most frequently affected by these injuries.
  • To establish evidence-based recommendations for preventing sauna-related injuries.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective analysis of patient data was performed at a trauma center.
  • Data collected included patient demographics, injury causes, diagnoses, affected body regions, and treatments.
  • The study period spanned from January 1, 2005, to December 31, 2021.

Main Results:

  • Two hundred and nine patients experienced sauna-related injuries, with slips/falls (57.5%) and dizziness/syncope (30.0%) being the most common causes.
  • Contusions/distortions (41.2%) and wounds (28.8%) were the most frequent diagnoses.
  • Head and face injuries were often linked to dizziness, while lower extremity and extremity injuries resulted from slips/falls.

Conclusions:

  • Slip/falls and dizziness/syncope are the leading causes of sauna-related injuries.
  • Preventive measures include promoting adequate hydration and revising safety regulations, such as mandating slip-resistant footwear.
  • Both individual behavior and facility operator actions are crucial for reducing sauna injury incidence.
