Learning Disabilities

Learning disabilities are cognitive disorders caused by neurological impairments that affect cognitive functions like language and reading, without indicating overall intellectual or developmental challenges. These disabilities differ from global intellectual or developmental disabilities as they are limited to distinct cognitive functions. Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction alongside restrictive and repetitive behaviors or interests. ASD is sometimes accompanied by intellectual impairment.
These core symptoms manifest differently among individuals, ranging from mild to severe. The disorder's complexity extends beyond its clinical presentation, encompassing a diverse range of biological, cognitive, and sociocultural influences.

Background:

Participation disparities among Black children with disabilities are well-documented across disciplines.
Grounded in the Social Model of Disability and Disability Critical Race Theory.

Purpose of the Study:

To conduct a scoping review examining occupational therapy's contribution to the study of participation outcomes for Black children with disabilities.
To assess the extent of research on participation outcomes in this population.

Main Methods:

A scoping review of empirical studies published between 2010 and 2021.
Included studies reported participation outcome data and were published in nine frequently cited journals.
Twenty studies met the inclusion criteria.

Main Results:

Participation outcomes were analyzed across six occupations: play, social participation, activities of daily living (ADLs), education, sleep, and health management.
Most reviewed studies involved small sample sizes of Black children with disabilities.
Limited to no detailed description of participation differences by racial/ethnic demographics was provided.

Conclusions:

Occupational therapy has made limited contributions to the literature on participation disparities for Black children with disabilities.
Further research is needed to address these gaps and inform practice.
Implications for occupational therapy practice are discussed.
