Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of verb semantics on thematic role encoding using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS).
  • To determine if the posterior portion of the left posterior parietal sulcus (PPS) is crucial for processing thematic roles.
  • To examine the effect of TMS on agent-decision tasks involving sentences and pseudo-sentences.

Main Methods:

  • TMS was applied to the posterior PPS in 16 participants during an agent-decision task.
  • Participants decided the agent of visually presented active/passive sentences or pseudo-sentences.
  • TMS was delivered in double pulses at two time windows (200-400 ms or 600-800 ms) or during a sham condition.

  • TMS significantly increased accuracy for passive sentences and pseudo-sentences compared to active ones.
