Summary

Background:

Advanced Practice Nursing (APN) is crucial in healthcare.
Establishing new APN roles requires competency clarity.
International comparisons of APN competence frameworks are lacking, particularly in China.

Purpose of the Study:

To identify the core competencies for advanced practice nursing in China.
To develop a defined competency framework for APN roles.

Main Methods:

Two-phase study: qualitative interviews with 46 stakeholders and a Delphi technique with 28 experts.
Qualitative content analysis to extract initial competencies.
Delphi technique to refine and finalize the core competency framework.

Main Results:

A core competency framework with six domains and 61 items was established.
Domains include: direct clinical practice, research, professional development, organization/management, mentoring/consultation, and ethical/legal practice.
The framework emerged from qualitative data and expert consensus via Delphi rounds.

Conclusions:

The developed six-domain, 61-item framework provides a basis for advanced practice nursing.
It can be utilized for competency-based education and assessment of advanced practice nurses.
This framework addresses the need for defined APN competencies in China.
