Summary

Probiotic supplements, when combined with antihistamines, significantly reduce chronic urticaria activity. This study found no significant improvement in patients' quality of life despite reduced urticaria symptoms.

Background:

  • Urticaria is a prevalent itchy skin condition marked by swelling and erythema.
  • Chronic resistant urticaria often requires advanced treatment strategies.
  • Existing treatments for urticaria have varying degrees of efficacy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the clinical impact of probiotic supplementation in patients with chronic, treatment-resistant urticaria.
  • To evaluate the efficacy of probiotics as an adjunct therapy for urticaria.
  • To determine if probiotics can improve urticaria activity and patient quality of life.

Main Methods:

  • A four-way blind randomized clinical trial was conducted from June 2019 to June 2020.
  • Patients with chronic urticaria unresponsive to antihistamines were enrolled.
  • Intervention: antihistamine (cetirizine) + probiotics (femilact capsule) vs. Control: antihistamine (cetirizine) + placebo for 8 weeks.

Main Results:

  • Both groups showed reduced Urticarial Activity for 7 Days (UAS7) scores.
  • The intervention group experienced a significantly greater reduction in UAS7 scores (9.6±6.4) compared to the control group (12.7±8.1) (P=0.036).
  • No significant difference in Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) scores was observed between groups after 8 weeks (P=0.805).

Conclusions:

  • Probiotic consumption, alongside antihistamines, significantly enhances the management of urticaria activity.
  • Probiotics did not demonstrate a significant impact on the quality of life for patients with chronic urticaria in this study.
  • Further research may explore long-term effects and different probiotic strains for urticaria treatment.
