    Background:

    • Digitalis is a common medication for older patients.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the prevalence of digitalis use in a Florida retirement community.
    • To assess the characteristics of elderly digitalis users.
    • To understand reasons for digitalis discontinuation.

    • A telephone survey was conducted in a retirement community (n=463).
    • Respondents reflected the local census demographics (mean age 72.6 years, 97% >55 years).
    • Data collected on current and past digitalis use, and reasons for cessation.

    • 11.4% of the sample had taken digitalis, with 6.9% currently using it.
    • Current digitalis users were significantly older and reported worse health status.
    • 17% of those who stopped digitalis reported adverse symptoms or complications.

    Conclusions:

    • Digitalis use is widespread among the elderly in this Florida community.
    • Older age and poorer health status are associated with digitalis use.
    • Further investigation into managing cardiac issues and digitalis in the elderly is warranted.
