Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

400
Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Barriers to Effective Communication II

The barriers to effective communication also include cultural barriers, semantic barriers, gender barriers, and time constraints.
Cultural barriers:
Differences in values, beliefs, religion, knowledge, and tradition can significantly impact communication. Awareness of nonverbal cues is critical, especially when conversing with a patient from a different culture. What appears appropriate in one culture may be inappropriate in another.
Semantic barriers:

Self-Discrepancy Theory

One influential perspective on what motivates people's behavior is detailed in Tory Higgin's self-discrepancy theory (Higgins, 1987). He proposed that people hold disagreeing internal representations of themselves that lead to different emotional states.

Barriers to Effective Communication I

9.0K
A communication barrier is any distortion or interruption during a conversation, resulting in miscommunication of the message. A good communicator should know these barriers and continuously check for the listener's understanding by obtaining feedback.
Communication barriers include the following:
Physiological barriers: They are limitations caused by a person's health condition or disability, such as hearing loss, poor eyesight, illness, or unconsciousness. An example to overcome this...

Reliability and Validity01:29

Reliability and Validity

12.8K
Reliability and validity are two important considerations that must be made with any type of data collection. Reliability refers to the ability to consistently produce a given result. In the context of psychological research, this would mean that any instruments or tools used to collect data do so in consistent, reproducible ways.

Theory of Romantic Attachment in Adulthood

Attachment is a long-standing connection or bond with others. While Attachment Theory was conceived in developmental psychology to describe infant-caregiver bonding, it's been extended into adulthood to include romantic relationships.

Summary

Therapists often avoid using immediacy, a key skill for processing the therapeutic relationship. A new scale, the Barriers to Using Immediacy Scale (BUIS), identifies therapist concerns and lack of skills as key avoidance reasons.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Psychotherapy Research
  • Clinical Psychology

Background:

  • Immediacy is a therapeutic skill enhancing the client-therapist relationship.
  • Therapists exhibit reluctance in utilizing immediacy skills.
  • Understanding barriers to immediacy use is crucial for effective training.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate a scale measuring therapists' barriers to using immediacy.
  • To identify specific factors contributing to the avoidance of immediacy in therapy.

Main Methods:

  • Three studies involving therapist trainees and professionals were conducted.
  • Scale development included exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses.
  • Correlational analyses examined relationships between barriers, self-efficacy, and other psychological constructs.

Main Results:

  • The Barriers to Using Immediacy Scale (BUIS) demonstrated a robust four-factor structure.
  • Barriers related to lack of skills decreased post-training, while others persisted.
  • BUIS scores correlated significantly with self-efficacy, theoretical orientation, communication, and attachment styles.

Conclusions:

  • The BUIS effectively measures therapist reluctance to use immediacy.
  • Addressing skill deficits and specific concerns may improve immediacy utilization.
  • Findings inform therapist training and enhance understanding of therapeutic relationship dynamics.
