Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα) deficiency worsens alcoholic liver disease (ALD) by altering lipid metabolism and gut bacteria. Targeting gut microbiota and metabolites like 4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid may offer new ALD treatments.
