    Elderly patients with atrial fibrillation often have undiagnosed thyroid dysfunction. The thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) test effectively screens for thyroid issues, suggesting hypothyroidism may cause atrial fibrillation in older adults.

    Background:

    • Atrial fibrillation is common in the elderly.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the incidence of masked thyroid dysfunction in elderly patients with atrial fibrillation.
    • To assess the utility of the thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) test in this population.
    • To explore the relationship between thyroid dysfunction and atrial fibrillation in the elderly.

    Main Methods:

    • A cohort of 75 elderly patients with atrial fibrillation underwent a TRH stimulation test.
    • 30 age-matched controls without atrial fibrillation were included for comparison.
