Circulating hsa-miR-1-3p is elevated in type 1 diabetes patients and linked to poor glucose control. This microRNA may serve as a biomarker for predicting vascular complications in type 1 diabetes.
Area of Science:
- Endocrinology
- Molecular Biology
- Cardiovascular Research
Background:
- Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease causing glucose dysregulation and vascular complications.
- MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are implicated in T1D pathogenesis and associated comorbidities.
- Identifying novel biomarkers for T1D vascular complications is crucial.
Purpose of the Study:
- To analyze the circulating miRNA expression profile in patients with type 1 diabetes.
- To identify specific miRNAs associated with T1D and potential vascular risks.
- To explore the functional pathways targeted by identified miRNAs.
Main Methods:
- Plasma samples from 85 individuals (T1D patients and controls) were analyzed.
- Next-generation sequencing identified differentially expressed miRNAs.
- Taqman RT-PCR validated miRNA expression levels.
- Bioinformatic analysis investigated target gene pathways.
Main Results:
- hsa-miR-1-3p expression was significantly increased in T1D patients compared to controls.
- Elevated hsa-miR-1-3p levels correlated positively with glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c).
- Bioinformatic analysis revealed hsa-miR-1-3p targets genes involved in vascular development and cardiovascular diseases.
Conclusions:
- Circulating hsa-miR-1-3p is a potential prognostic biomarker for T1D.
- hsa-miR-1-3p may help predict and prevent vascular complications in T1D patients.
- Combined monitoring of hsa-miR-1-3p and glycemic control could improve T1D management.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. As a result, the body is unable to produce sufficient insulin, and individuals with...

Starch accounts for approximately 60% of the carbohydrates consumed by humans. Since amylase enzymes cannot function in the stomach's acidic environment, starch can only be digested in the mouth and small intestine. Simple sugars are found naturally in milk and fruits in...
