Lung cancer rarely spreads to the heart, with intracardiac metastasis being an extremely uncommon presentation. This case highlights the poor prognosis and lack of defined treatments for such rare lung cancer metastases.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Cardiology
- Pulmonology
Background:
- Lung carcinoma is a leading cause of cancer mortality globally.
- Metastatic disease at diagnosis is common in lung cancer, often associated with a worse prognosis.
- Intracardiac metastasis from lung cancer is exceptionally rare, with limited case reports.
Observation:
- A 54-year-old female presented with progressive dyspnea.
- Echocardiography revealed a left ventricular cavity mass with pericardial and pleural effusion.
- CT-guided lung biopsy confirmed adenocarcinoma of the lung.
Findings:
- The patient had an intracardiac mass, a rare manifestation of lung adenocarcinoma.
- Despite supportive care and targeted therapy (gefitinib), the patient's condition rapidly deteriorated.
- The patient died within one week of admission, indicating a poor prognosis.
Implications:
- Cardiac metastasis, particularly intracavitary, represents an extremely rare and aggressive presentation of lung cancer.
- Treatment strategies for cardiac metastasis from lung cancer are not well-defined.
- A multidisciplinary approach involving cardiology, oncology, pulmonology, and critical care is essential.
- Further research is needed to establish effective treatment options and improve outcomes for this rare condition.
