Background:

  • Growing concerns exist regarding the stability and strength of the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) workforce in the United States.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To estimate changes in the EMS workforce by evaluating clinician entry, retention, and exit.
  • To analyze the dynamics of both the certified EMS workforce and the patient care EMS workforce.

Main Methods:

  • A 4-year retrospective cohort evaluation (2017-2021) was conducted across 9 states.
  • The study included all certified EMS clinicians (EMT level and higher) requiring national EMS certification for licensure.
  • Data were analyzed for two populations: the certified workforce and the patient care workforce.

  • Over 62,000 certified EMS clinicians were evaluated, with over 52,000 providing patient care.
  • Between 18%-20% of the certified workforce and 29%-30% of the patient care workforce entered the field.
