    Summary

    Background:

    • Lateral preferences, or handedness, are complex traits.
    • Albinism is associated with atypical visual pathway development, including abnormal optic fibre decussation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate lateral preferences (eye, hand, foot) in individuals with albinism.
    • To explore the relationship between abnormal optic fibre decussation and lateral preferences in albinism.

    Main Methods:

    • Assessed lateral preferences for eye, hand, and foot in 17 albino subjects (aged 15-52).
    • Utilized Visual Evoked Potential (VEP) recordings to assess optic fibre decussation patterns.

    Main Results:

    • VEP recordings confirmed abnormal optic fibre decussation in the albino subjects.
    • Fewer albino subjects displayed typical lateral preferences for hand/eye and foot/eye compared to non-albino individuals.

    Conclusions:

    • Abnormal optic fibre decussation in albinism may contribute to reduced lateralization of hand/eye and foot/eye use.
    • Findings suggest a link between visual pathway anomalies and the development of motor lateralization in albinism.
