Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Science
  • Pain Research
  • Animal Models

Background:

  • Mechanical nociceptive threshold (MNT) assessment is crucial in pain research.
  • Large animal models offer physiological relevance to human pain studies.
  • Reliability data for MNT in large animals is limited.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the within- and between-session reliability of MNT in the pig forelimb.
  • To validate the use of a pressure algometer in a large animal pain model.

Main Methods:

  • Nine pigs (23-40 kg) were used for MNT measurements.
  • Measurements were taken on both forelimbs across three sessions with three repetitions each.
  • Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), coefficient of variation (CV), and standard error of measurement (SEM) were calculated.

Main Results:

  • Between-session ICC averaged 0.71; within-session ICC averaged 0.45.
  • Average CV was 19.1% (range 17.9%-20.5%); average SEM was 249.5 kPa (16.6%).
  • No systematic bias or habituation to the stimulus was observed between sessions.

Conclusions:

  • The pressure algometer demonstrates acceptable reliability for MNT assessment in pigs.
  • Findings support the use of this tool for investigating nociception in pigs.
  • This research aids in translating findings to human pain reflex studies.
