Summary

Integrated reciprocation in attachment-retained removable partial prosthesis (A-RPP) showed less marginal bone loss around abutments compared to conventional designs. This suggests integrated reciprocation is preferable for preserving periodontium.

Background:

  • Attachment-retained removable partial prostheses (A-RPP) are used to replace missing teeth.
  • Reciprocation designs are crucial for prosthesis stability and abutment health.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare marginal bone level (MBL) around abutments in integrated versus conventional reciprocation designs for A-RPP.
  • To evaluate the long-term effects of different reciprocation designs on abutment teeth.

Main Methods:

  • 14 participants were divided into two groups, receiving A-RPP with either integrated or conventional reciprocation.
  • Marginal bone level (MBL) around primary and secondary abutments was measured at baseline, 6 months, and 9 months.

Main Results:

  • No significant difference in MBL was observed within groups over time.
  • Integrated reciprocation group showed statistically significant lower mean MBL values at 6 and 9 months compared to the conventional group.

Conclusions:

  • Both integrated and conventional reciprocation designs in distal extension A-RPP were associated with increased bone loss.
  • Integrated reciprocation design demonstrated superior periodontium preservation around abutment teeth compared to conventional reciprocation.
