Cerebellitis, an inflammation of the cerebellum, linked to cryptococcal immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS) is reported for the first time. This unique case occurred in an individual with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and cryptococcosis.
Area of Science:
- Neuroscience
- Infectious Diseases
- Immunology
Background:
- Cryptococcal infections are common opportunistic infections in individuals with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
- Immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS) can occur following antiretroviral therapy initiation in HIV-infected individuals, leading to paradoxical worsening of infections.
- Cerebellitis, inflammation of the cerebellum, is a rare neurological complication of infections.
